Being a backcountry hunting guide is a challenge. Being a first-year backcountry guide is an even bigger challenge. To prepare, my first purchase was a subscription to onX. The outfitter had lots of advice and was descriptive about the ground to hunt. Much of the country I had yet to see.
I created maps for my phone as there is no cell service in our location. On these maps, I left breadcrumbs and details. With onX, I found every landmark mentioned, no matter how obscure, and confidently guided hunters in trail-less wilderness.
Out of the backcountry, I love features such as property ownership information and boundaries.
I'm sold on onX. It's almost like cheating - to be able to "read the land" before setting foot on it, was a boost for a 50 something, first time elk hunting guide. And when you are a woman, the need to be confident (and not get lost) is even higher. Love onX!!
Getting geared up for an archery hunt.
Snow coming in opening week of rifle.
Endless wilderness.
Warm afternoon watching a likely spot.
