This weekend, I took my new Razco Pack Mount Holster on its maiden voyage while elk hunting, and I wasn't disappointed. The holster worked flawlessly.
I was hunting in single-digit temps, in the snow, in the Gravelly Mountain Range near Ennis, Montana. Just a week before my hunt, a sow grizzly charged a hunter in the Gravelly Range, and the hunter was forced to defend himself, unfortunately killing the bear. But the incident highlights how dangerous hunting in grizzly bear country can be and the need for self-defense.
I attached the Razco Pack Mount Holster to the waist belt of my Mystery Ranch Metcalf pack. I ordered the holster via Guidefitter and made sure to select the right-hand option (I'm right-handed) with the default forward cant, which tilts the holster slightly forward, making it easier to grip your pistol and pull from the holster.
The Razco holster attaches easily to the Mystery Ranch waist belt, using two thin, flat arms that tuck snugly through the webbing loops.
Once the flat arms are inserted through the loops in the Mystery Ranch pack waist belt, it's a snap (literally) to click the metal rods in the upper part of the hinged attachment arms to the slots in the lower arms that are in place through the loops. The whole process of attaching the holster to my pack took about 60 seconds. The webbing on the waist belt was pretty tight, so I had to manually pull the metal rods forward a bit to "click" them into place, but it was no big deal.
When ordering your Razco Pack Mount Holster, make sure to select the right pistol (I'm using a customized Glock 20, Gen 5), note whether or not you're using a weapon light (I'm using a Streamlight TLR-7A), and if you have any other customizations, use the notes field when ordering to point them out. For example, my custom Glock 20 has a threaded barrel for a suppressor with a thread protector. I added a custom note to my order to make sure Justin and the Razco team knew to provide a slot in the holster for that threaded barrel to poke through, ensuring a perfect fit.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the construction of this product, how easy it is to attach to my Mystery Ranch Metcalf, and how snugly it holds my custom Glock, even with the weapon light and other mods. I have only used this holster on the Mystery Ranch Metcalf. Still, based on my experience so far, I highly recommend the Razco Pack Mount Holster to anyone looking for a great way to keep your bear defense pistol out of the way but at the ready while hiking or hunting.
