This is my second Vortex Venom with a 3 MOA dot and my third red dot sight. I purchased the first one in 2015 and used it on my carry pistol. I've taken that pistol through training, where I dropped it a few times during drills and used the sight to rack it during one-handed reloads-all that in 50 hours in a hot desert where it rained during one drill. It was excellent and durable.
My other red dot is a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro that I purchased two years ago for more than double the price of the Venom. I wanted something "more durable" (speculative) and liked the idea of the battery saver/instant on feature. The DeltaPoint sits higher, and the sight picture is slightly smaller - neither of which I liked. Now that DeltaPoint sits on a rifle, my original Venom is back on my carry gun.
I chose the Venom over the Viper because I wanted to be able to replace the battery from the top without having to unmount the sight. I like everything about this sight, so I purchased a second one, now mounted on a Glock 20 Gen 5 10mm. Even with the larger caliber, I expect it to last, but with the lifetime warranty, I am not worried.
The auto-shutoff feature did not work on my original Venom, but that did not bother me once I knew to turn it off at the end of the day. I will test this feature on the new one.
The only negative point is the battery - CR1632. It can be harder to find, so I purchase them two at a time. The battery life is good, but I still replace it annually, so I won't have to worry about it.
