With inflation rampant across North America, turkey hunters must make intelligent decisions as they prepare for turkey season and head afield this fall. Time is at a premium, travel is expensive, and hunters like to be successful. Here are a few strategies to ensure you’ll have fresh turkey on the menu.

Pattern your shotgun

Taking the time to pattern a shotgun is the best way to kill a big gobbler when opportunity knocks. Not knowing the effective pattern of your shotgun is the best way to miss. Knowing how many pellets are in the kill zone, or the head and neck of a bird, ensures you will be on target when the real McCoy shows up.

Shoot distances you expect to hunt

Experienced turkey hunters prefer a 25- or 30-yard shot to allow the shot pattern to open and increase the odds for a clean and quick kill. However, smart old gobblers don’t always cooperate, and having to reach 40 or 50 yards is often the scenario. If you think there is a chance you could shoot longer ranges, make sure to practice and check your pattern at the distances you will hunt.

Reflex or red dot

Turkey hunters often find themselves in an awkward position on the ground when a turkey shows up. A shooter is often reaching or not holding the shotgun level when a shot opportunity arises. A reflex or red dot sight makes it easy to be on target, even when a shotgun isn’t mounted correctly. If you can see the red dot, your pattern will go where you patterned it.

Hit them hard

Shotshell technology continues to provide advantages to hunters. Fiocchi Golden Turkey TSS is made with premium tungsten that weighs 18g/cc, providing small pellets with unbelievable kinetic energy and penetration. Tungsten pellets are small, dense, and hit like a freight train. A pattern of pellets placed on the head and neck of a giant bird will stop the flop and render a turkey dead and motionless. TSS will shoot farther, hit harder, and pattern with densities that will blow a turkey’s mind. Forget everything you know or consider about 3 ½-inch turkey loads and hunt smarter. The cost of a single shotshell is nothing compared to the homework, dedication, travel, clothing, equipment, and licenses turkey hunters spend hard-earned cash on.

Less recoil

The Golden Turkey TSS loads have less recoil than 3 ½-inch magnums. Quick recovery after a shot can be the difference between success and frustration.
